Summary

Troubled Waters

Free at last, Thorfinn sets off on an expedition to Vinland, to establish a place free of war and slavery。 In an effort to fund his project, Thorfinn visits Iceland where Halfdan, a wealthy man who shared a dark history with his late father, awaits。 Meanwhile, the marriage between Halfdan's son Sigurd and Leif's relative Gudrid is well under way, but Gudrid dreams of being a sailor not a bride。 A battle soon breaks out as Gudrid attempts to escape aboard Leif's ship。 With Sigurd hot on their tail, Thorfinn and the crew press eastward to the city of Miklagard, picking up an orphaned baby and a dog along the way。。。

A whole new journey has begun and I am a huge fan of the direction the story has taken! Especially with the new character Gudrid, her storyline is so good and I might sense a spark of romance, but not so sure just yet。

The character arc of Thorfinn is not complete yet, half way there。 Hope to see the development fully。 The art, the details and connection between different things are just too good to read。 Can't describe more, I don't have words。。。 The character arc of Thorfinn is not complete yet, half way there。 Hope to see the development fully。 The art, the details and connection between different things are just too good to read。 Can't describe more, I don't have words。。。 。。。more

Outstanding! Back on the 5 star train。

Arco novo, vida nova!

I already love Gudrid and hope she remains a mainstay in Thorfinn’s story。 I have appreciated the way Thorfinn’s guilt has been portrayed thus far and am excited to see what adventures lie in wait on the path for his redemption and growth as a person。

Picking up Vinland Saga after a break from it does not make the story any less exciting or compelling。 Thorfinn is an incredible character as always, and the cast continues to grow and become more interesting。 Love this series。

I’m so sad to see Askeladd go。 He was a terrible person but a goddamn fantastic character。 You have to admit that's a fucken badass way to go though。 I’m so sad to see Askeladd go。 He was a terrible person but a goddamn fantastic character。 You have to admit that's a fucken badass way to go though。 。。。more

Probably a 3。5 star for me。 I liked it, it was good, the art is great, Gudrid is an adorable dork, but nothing grabbed me in this book。 I think because as a reader I feel on the outside looking in and all the characters are closed, not revealing much of themselves

Whitney

I am so excited about these female characters!

Keeps things from getting stagnant。 Very wise to break pace like that。

Obligatory vengeance exists for the sake of peace for all。 The crueler the outcome, the firmer the lesson。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I like the introduction of Gudrid and the ongoing struggles of Norse who are pulled between their pagan past and culture and their Christian future。 Nice touch。 And I knew from looking ahead that they weren’t making it to Vinland anytime soon。 I’m happy to know that they aren’t getting sidetracked for some stupid reason, seems like a good side plot of having to go to Miklagard in order to get money for their trip to Vinland。 It’s like a windy D&D campaign。 Not the best storytelling, but not enti I like the introduction of Gudrid and the ongoing struggles of Norse who are pulled between their pagan past and culture and their Christian future。 Nice touch。 And I knew from looking ahead that they weren’t making it to Vinland anytime soon。 I’m happy to know that they aren’t getting sidetracked for some stupid reason, seems like a good side plot of having to go to Miklagard in order to get money for their trip to Vinland。 It’s like a windy D&D campaign。 Not the best storytelling, but not entirely bad。 Seems to have a purpose。 Also Hild is cool。 。。。more

This is the beginning of Thorfinn's journey now that he is freed。 What I love here, is in many ways this begins to follow the traditional anime journey, a leader with a plan, gathering an eccentric crew, but because Thorfinn is now refusing to kill people, but also the only one on his crew capable of protecting people, the dynamic is very different。 There are a number of emotional moments, my favorite is Thorfinn being reunited with his family!

I'll be honest when I read the description I was a little skeptical。 However, Yukimura's art just transcends any doubt。 I could watch Thorfinn be a farmer for his long life and that art would be enough。 That being said, the beginning of this omnibus was fairly shaky, the characters were solid but it was a lot of set up。 Not sure that that's a huge issue, but upon rereading it may not be as engaging as say the first 4 omnibus'。 Something to consider later。 Though the end, (mostly volume 16) was g I'll be honest when I read the description I was a little skeptical。 However, Yukimura's art just transcends any doubt。 I could watch Thorfinn be a farmer for his long life and that art would be enough。 That being said, the beginning of this omnibus was fairly shaky, the characters were solid but it was a lot of set up。 Not sure that that's a huge issue, but upon rereading it may not be as engaging as say the first 4 omnibus'。 Something to consider later。 Though the end, (mostly volume 16) was great。 Well paced。 I think I'm finally starting to understand what Vinland Saga is aiming to be and its glorious and I'm so happy with it。 Omnibus 9 is on it's way!!! 。。。more

An up and down volume this one, more planning and development than action but there is the beginning of an adventure!Thorfinn continues to try hard to maintain his non-violent lifestyle, aided by his brother Einer, in their endeavour to find and colonise Vinland。The ragtag crew eventually make their way East to sell wares to fund their future venture to Vinland。 Once they get underway, the pace and excitement of the story increase。

The action and drama of previous volumes is mostly discarded as the story veers into comic farce with Runaway Bride and Three Men and a Baby antics。 It's nice to see some more female characters at least, but I wonder if we're starting to pull an Outlaw Josey Wales and gathering a quirky lot of potential settlers for Thorfinn's utopian settlement in Vinland。 Well, before that can happen, time for a two-year side trip to Greece。 Strange choice, but I'm along for the ride。 The action and drama of previous volumes is mostly discarded as the story veers into comic farce with Runaway Bride and Three Men and a Baby antics。 It's nice to see some more female characters at least, but I wonder if we're starting to pull an Outlaw Josey Wales and gathering a quirky lot of potential settlers for Thorfinn's utopian settlement in Vinland。 Well, before that can happen, time for a two-year side trip to Greece。 Strange choice, but I'm along for the ride。 。。。more

A different entry in the series。 Slower, some new characters, allies and enemies, kind of a switch in the main story, going in a new era, a new step in the storyline。 Good but not one of my favorite。

It's been a while since I picked up this series。 I got a little bored with the Thorfinn the farmer arc but that is now over and is now back home with his father's friend Lief and Thorfinn's ex-slave friend。 But Thorfinn hasn't been home since he was about ten years old。The bulk of this one still didn't grab me like the early series did (until the end)。 It sort of plods along as Lief is confronted with a young girl he knows who has always tried to stow away and see the world but now she's of marr It's been a while since I picked up this series。 I got a little bored with the Thorfinn the farmer arc but that is now over and is now back home with his father's friend Lief and Thorfinn's ex-slave friend。 But Thorfinn hasn't been home since he was about ten years old。The bulk of this one still didn't grab me like the early series did (until the end)。 It sort of plods along as Lief is confronted with a young girl he knows who has always tried to stow away and see the world but now she's of marrying age and is slated for marriage to the spoiled son of a hard, vicious man who is basically the Viking equivalent of a loan shark。 Long story short, it shines an unpleasant light on the plight of women in that time period and by the end of it Thorfinn and Lief are in trouble especially when they need this man's help to gain the capital to fund a journey to Vinland (Canada) and are being dogged by the would-be husband。It was interesting enough but not that exciting until the last chapter。 Thorfinn has taken a vow of peace but when confronted with a bear that's challenged。 Enter Hild, a scarred young woman who is a huntress and whose past is tangled up with Thorfinn's vicious one。 It ends in a tense standoff。 I immediately liked Hild。 I'll be interested in how this all shakes out。 The art is very detailed and wonderful (has an excellent picture of Thorfinn and all his scars, it says a lot with no words)。 。。。more

Relationships adjust as Thorfinn returns home and looks to figure out how to built on his dream of a nation built on personal freedom without war。 We see a bit less action and more social interplay but the book ends on an intense cliffhanger。 If you've read this far, you'll be glad to have volume 9 on hand for when you finish this one so you can see what happens next pretty quickly。 Relationships adjust as Thorfinn returns home and looks to figure out how to built on his dream of a nation built on personal freedom without war。 We see a bit less action and more social interplay but the book ends on an intense cliffhanger。 If you've read this far, you'll be glad to have volume 9 on hand for when you finish this one so you can see what happens next pretty quickly。 。。。more

The next arc begins and somehow it still remains fucking great。 Thorfinn is ready to travel to Vinland。 His mind is set on creating a new world, one with happiness and no war。 It's nearly impossible of course but it still brings something new to the table that we're used to violence and pain。 Before we get going through we are introduced to Lief, a woman who wants to be a sailor。 Of course back in the day that was NOT allowed but she won't just get married off, will she?
